Chartered in Michigan in 1884, The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has an ongoing objective to honor and preserve Union veterans' legacy. This is accomplished by researching and documenting the registrations of Civil War veteran’s graves, assisting local historians and associations in creating articles for their newsletters, appearing as guest speakers at community meetings, participating in grave marker dedications, Veteran Day ceremonies, and especially Memorial Day celebrations which the GAR originated (as Decoration Day) on May 5, 1868. This objective is upheld through the efforts of the 200 SUVCW Camps' efforts throughout the country, twenty-two of which we have right here in Michigan.
